On the basis of Ternopil University Hospital and on the basis of Emergency medical care center was established the Department of urgent and emergency medical care in 2012 (order number 504). Head of the department - Professor Mykola Shved. The major areas of interests - urgent conditions, cardiology, rheumatology and endocrinology. The clinical bases of the department are cardiology, nephrology departments, chamber of intensive therapy, the department of medicine telemetry of Ternopil University Hospital and ambulances of Emergency medical care center.

Currently, the department urgent and emergency medical care counts:- 1 professor (MD), 4 associate professors (4 PhD), 4 assistants (1 PhD). In the deprtment 5 employees have higher doctor's category and 3 – the first doctor's category.

History of the department

On the basis of Ternopil University Hospital and on the basis of Emergency medical care center was established the Department of urgent and emergency medical care in 2012 (order number 504). Head of the department - Professor Mykola Shved. The major areas of interests - urgent conditions, cardiology, rheumatology and endocrinology. The clinical bases of the department are cardiology, nephrology departments, chamber of intensive therapy, the department of medicine telemetry of Ternopil University Hospital and ambulances of Emergency medical care center.

Teaching work. The teachers of the department train students of 4 and 6 courses of medical faculty, students of 5 cours of dental faculty, distance learning nurses, nurse-bachelors and masters of Nursing Institute. The book "Fundamentals of Internal Medicine" was prepared and published by publishing house "Ukrmedknyha" in 2013. This book represents main protocols and algorithms for urgent and emergency medical care. In 2015 issued a book "Emergency medical care".

The main disciplines of the deprtment are: "emergency medical care" and "emergency conditions in internal medicine”. The primary task of the subject "emergency medical care" is to to train student’s practical skills in equiped with mannequins, models,modern tools and other property in training rooms. Practical training takes place in the form of playing scenarios - simulated real situations in which conventionally occurs sudden cardiac arrest or other condition that requires emergency care. During practical class students perform functions of emergency medical care members and accompany the brigade of EMD in the ambulance.

In classrooms are set posters of emergency conditions algorithms. During classes in department of urgent and emergency medical care the priority is given to the technology of primary and secondary examination (for basic diagnosis and treatment of any emergency condition). Considerable attention is also given to the implementation of communicative abilities of students, team work, their psychological preparation. An additional task of the teacher is the formation of positive motivation for realization of student’s abilities.

At the second part of lesson students go to call-up as a part of emergency team (in accordance of the agreement between SHEI "Ternopil State Medical University named after I.Gorbachevskyi" and the center of emergency care). Previously the instruction of safety with all students is held. After return the discussion of each event, the quality of diagnosis and treatment of patients is made with the teacher.

In 2015, the department received a set of training property on which students qualified the elements of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, endotracheal intubation, assessment of cardiac rhythm, defibrillation with adaptation to modern protocols of emergency medicine.

In the educational process introduced some updated protocols of emergency medicine (18 protocols), which was developed together with specialists from the Faculty of Postgraduate Education, some elements of the emergency medical care for injured victims in ITLS system (International Trauma Life Support). New approaches for emergency and urgent medical care in mass cases were implemented. At the learning process the standards of ALS (Advanced Life Support - skilled resuscitation measures) of the European Resuscitation Council were implemented. The teachers of department - assoc. prof. Martynyuk L.P. and assoc. prof. Liakhovych R.M. took a course of ALS in Krakow, received a certificate of mastery of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Sphere of scientific interests of department’s staff

Traditional ways of scientific research of department’s staff - cardiology, rheumatology, nephrology and endocrinology, in particular - the problem of arterial hypertension, ischemic heart disease and myocardial infarction, osteoporosis and diabetes mellitus. In 2013-2016 the department's staff conducted research in integrated interdepartmental scientific work on the problems of comorbidity in internal medicine.

Clinical work.

The medical facilities of department are - the chamber intensive care (9 beds), 15 beds of cardiology department, endocrinology department (50 beds) and hemodialysis department (16 installations) of "Ternopil University Hospital", and 2 substations of EMD (Ternopil).

6 workmates of department have the highest level and 3 workmates – first level of medical category. For providing the modern approaches to diagnostics and treatment of renal diseases, cardiovascular diseases and diseases of the respiratory system the workmates of department introduced: daily monitoring of heart rate and blood pressure, tests with dosed physical activity, transesophageal echoscopy, algorithms of intensive treatment of nephrotic syndrome (pulse therapy, plasmapheresis, hemodiafiltration), were developed the algorithms for diagnostics and treatment the disorders of mineral metabolism and bone pathology.

To zoom the specialized medical care for the population, the workmates of department carry out advisory visits to the health - care institutions of Ternopil region. Department’s staff carry out the telemetering counseling of clinics of primary health care in such villages as - Zarubyntsi, Hnylytsi, V.Hovyliv, Uvysla and Kokoshyntsi.
